What *is* Calendula?
Calendula officinalis
Also known as pot marigold (not to be confused with common garden marigolds, Tagetes species), calendula is the dried flower of a member of the aster family native to south-central Europe and northern Africa. It is an annual commonly grown in gardens for its bright display of yellow or orange flowers.
Traditional Uses of Calendula:
The flowers have been applied to cuts and wounds, burns and bruises, and used as a tea for gastric ulcers and other stomach ailments, for jaundice and other conditions. Not only is Calendula a wonderful healing and medicinal herb, but it is also a lovely and useful plant in the garden. Calendula repels many common garden pests including aphids, eelworms, asparagus beetles, and tomato hornworms, and is a companion plant for potatoes, beans, and lettuce. Calendula grows quickly and is easy to cultivate from seed.
Calendula has anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, astringent, antifungal, antiviral, and immunostimulant properties making it useful for disinfecting and treating minor wounds, conjunctivitis, cuts, scrapes, chapped or chafed skin, bruises, burns, athlete’s foot, acne, yeast infections, bee stings, diaper rashes, and other minor irritations and infections of the skin. It also stimulates the production of collagen at wound sites to help minimize scarring and assist with stretch marks. Apply to sore, cracked nipples for soothing relief and faster healing; helps heal radiation burns due to cancer treatments; excellent for helping heal eczema and psoriasis and helps prevent scarring.
This versatile herb can be incorporated into baths, creams, compresses, washes, salves, ointments, massage oils, baths, facial steams, tinctures, and teas. It is also gentle enough to use for babies, children, or animals.
